  • Midday Retreat with the Mystics: Jean-Pierre de Caussade

St. Joseph's Seminary 201 Seminary Ave, Yonkers, NY, United States

Midday Retreat with the Mystics: Jean-Pierre de Caussade

So many in our busy and hectic world today feel the need for prayerful silence and interior recollection. But it’s hard to get away to a monastery! So we’ll be offering an oasis of contemplation at St. Joseph’s Seminary, learning from the great Saints and mystics of the Church and through their guidance entering into prayer.

    Saturday, March 29, 2025
    Jean-Pierre de Caussade

St. Joseph’s Seminary will be offering a “Midday Retreat with the Mystics” the 3rd Saturday of every other month. Each month will showcase the spiritual teaching of one particular Saint or mystic. We will sit at their feet and allow them to help draw us into the riches of the spiritual life and into the depths of God.

Fr. Ignatius John Schweitzer, O.P. will give a talk on the spiritual life based on the doctrine of the mystic of the month. Then we will have Eucharistic Exposition with periods of silence, along with some guided meditations based on the holy person we are highlighting that day. There will also be the opportunity to be prayed over and anointed with the Oil of St. Elizabeth of the Trinity, beseeching the Lord for graces of deeper prayer. We’ll go 12 to 3pm but feel free to leave as you need to.

    11:00am Mass (optional)

12:00pm Conference Talk (on the particular Saint chosen for that day)

1:00-3:00pm Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament (with periods of silence and guided meditations from the Saint)

    3:00pm Q & A and Social (with light refreshments)

    Donations are welcome.

If you cannot attend in person, we’re streaming to our St. Joseph’s Seminary YouTube. Here’s the link: youtube.com/@saintjosephsseminaryandcol7384

You can also visit the Dominican House of Prayer to watch the recorded retreat.

  • Westminster Cathedral Choir, London

Church of St. Ignatius Loyola 980 Park Avenue, New York, NY, United States

    Westminster Cathedral Choir, London

Westminster Cathedral Choir is widely considered to be one of the finest choirs in the world. Since its foundation in 1901 it has occupied a unique and enviable position at the forefront of English church music, not least because of the ground-breaking work of its first Master of Music, Sir Richard Terry, who revived the great works of the English and continental Renaissance composers.

The choir’s fame grew under Terry as it presented this forgotten music, transforming attitudes to the repertoire. Innovation continued under George Malcolm who pioneered the development of the choir’s sound along continental lines, resulting in a choir that was truly revolutionary in both what and how it sang. The choir continues these traditions today, and it remains the only Catholic Cathedral choir in the world to sing daily Mass and Vespers. More recent holders of the post have included Colin Mawby, Stephen Cleobury, David Hill, James O’Donnell, and Martin Baker. Since September 2021, the choir has been directed by Simon Johnson.

The choir has a history of commissioning and performing new music, famous examples being Britten’s Missa brevis for boys’ voices, the Mass in G minor by Vaughan Williams and compositions by Wood, Holst and Howells. Over the last two decades, the choir has commissioned new Masses from James MacMillan, Peter Maxwell Davies, Judith Bingham, John Tavener, Matthew Martin and Stephen Hough, all of which were first performed in the context of the regular liturgies at Westminster Cathedral.

Works by artists including Francis Poulenc, William Byrd, Josef Rheinberger, and James MacMillan will be presented at this performance.
