Lenten Season

Season of Grace Guide to Lent and Easter

Lent is a sacred season of preparation, reflection, and renewal leading up to Easter. It is a time for deepening our faith through prayer, fasting, and acts of charity. The Archdiocese of New York has prepared a simple guide explaining what you need to know to observe Lent in 2025. This three page booklet explores such topics as:

  • Why do we receive ashes on Ash Wednesday?
  • What is fasting and why do we do it?
  • How can I deepen my Lenten experience?
  • When are the different events of Holy Week?
  • And more!

Family Activity Book

This free downloadable booklet is designed to help children and families experience the season of Lent together in a fun and meaningful way, and includes:

  • A Lenten paper chain activity to count down the days to Easter with prayers and good deeds.
  • Coloring pages to bring Lenten themes to life through creativity.
  • A family guide for the Examination of Conscience to help children understand forgiveness and God’s mercy.

Help Topics

Parishes and ministries currently need new and engaging ways to connect with parishioners outside of the physical church building. Many have embraced the use of social media platforms for livestreaming Masses and prayer services. In an increasingly connected world, the importance and momentum of social media are essential tools for the 21st century Church.

If you are overseeing social media or online communications for your parish or ministry, here are some resources you may find helpful.

Building a Parish Website

Parishes of the Archdiocese of New York are invited to claim their free website provided through eCatholic. To learn more and sign up, visit newyork.ecatholic.com.

Your website is more than a bulletin board. Your website is often the first thing someone looking up your parish sees, and it’s important to make a good first impression. Use high-resolution images and videos to showcase the best of your parish.

Online Communications

The Archdiocese of New York is proud to offer the parishes of the archdiocese Flocknote, a tool for communicating to your parishioners via email and texts, to let them know about the latest news, upcoming events, and more.

Flocknote is effective, simple to use, and free for parishes of the archdiocese. Click here to get started.

Events

In addition to sharing events hosted by your own ministry, parish, or group, you can also keep an eye out for relevant events to share on your social media channels. In addition to keeping your pages active, you will be building an audience that returns to you for content relevant to their interests. You can find events on the Archdiocese of New York calendar here.

Ministries of the archdiocese also host regional events that may be relevant to your audience. Be sure to visit the social media pages of ministries that share in your goals and initiatives to find more events and posts your audience might enjoy.

Liturgical Year

The liturgical year consists of the cycle of liturgical seasons in Christian churches that determines when feast days, including celebrations of saints, are to be observed, and which portions of Scripture are to be read either in an annual cycle or in a cycle of several years.

These days are great to keep in mind when thinking about what to post on social media and coming up with a content calendar. Learn more about each liturgical season on our website here.

USCCB

The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) is an assembly of the hierarchy of bishops who jointly exercise pastoral functions on behalf of the Christian faithful of the United States and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Check out their website here.

You’ll be able to find information and resources to learn more about the Church, what the Church teaches, and how to grow in your faith as well as daily readings and updates on the Catholic church world wide. Their calendar is helpful when planning social media posts as you can see the feast days by month. View it here.
