St. Benedict wrote his Rule for monasteries in the 5th century; in the 16th century St Ignatius of Loyola founded the Jesuits whose mission was to go wherever the Church needed them to evangelize the world. Both spiritual traditions still attract followers, whether as vowed religious or as laywomen and laymen who follow the Benedictine or Jesuit way in their own lives. Savor the differences and similarities of these two great traditions and see what they might have to offer you as an enrichment of your own relationship with God.
