Diversifying the Sacred Space

“I looked, and behold, a great multitude… of all nations, tribes, peoples, and tongues.” Revelation 7:9

The very term “catholic,” from the ancient Greek “katholikos,” means “universal,” or inclusive of the whole world. In this exhibit, artist Laura James presents a visually distinct and vibrant series of religious images inspired by Old and New Testament texts, with an eye toward a more culturally inclusive representation of Biblical figures. Building on the ancient Ethiopian Christian style of iconography, James’ paintings offer black and other people of color an opportunity to see themselves reflected in sacred art – and for all viewers to experience the beautiful cultural and racial diversity that makes up the church.
