For nearly 40 years the first Saturday of June brings the people of Our Lady of Mount Carmel parish and the disabled from the Fordettes Handicapped Club together for a day of prayer, reflection and wonderful Italian food in the Arthur Avenue section of the Bronx. The Fordettes, started in 1953 by the late Ruth Arreche with support from soon-to-be Terence Cardinal Cooke, has been dedicated to celebrating the First Saturdays of the month at different parishes througout the Bronx in honor of Our Lady of Fatima. The generosity of spirit displayed by Rt. Rev John Ruvo and his parishioners for so many years brighten the day for so many disabled who look forward to this event each year.
