The Good NewsroomTM, the new digital news outlet for the Archdiocese of New York, has made its mobile application available to continue to support connection with its communities.

Tuesday, January 31, 2023 – Just two months after its debut launch, The Good NewsroomTMhas enhanced accessibility for its viewers and readers with the creation of an app that is now available in the Apple Store and Google Play.

With a goal of enhancing a sense of community among Catholics and non-Catholics alike, The Good Newsroom was launched by the Archdiocese of New York in late November 2022 to better communicate with the faithful of the archdiocese as well as the broader community at large.

The new digital newsroom, with daily news published through digital channels, replaced a bi-weekly print newspaper that had been in existence for over four decades. The new entity relies heavily on video storytelling and quick turnaround times for reporting on events and initiatives of the archdiocese. The high-quality content and stories about people, parishes, and ministries of the archdiocese can now be found via push notifications on mobile devices through the apps.

Cardinal Timothy Michael Dolan, Archbishop of New York, has been a key figure in the newsroom content. “There are many stories for us to tell through The Good Newsroom. We Catholics like to get together in person for events and celebrations, and of course for weekly Mass! But the digital realm allows our messages to travel further. Our social media efforts, and now our app, are very important to our mission of spreading the message of the Gospel.”

In its first month, the newsroom website generated considerable interest with 48,000 visitors and 8,300 video views. Stories range from updates on parishes, schools, charitable outreach, and the healthcare ministry to breaking news, such as Pope Benedict XVI’s death and funeral Mass. As the archdiocese is in the media capital of the world, the newsroom will continue to innovate its news delivery platforms and enhance opportunities to reach its audiences. The availability of the app is the first of the planned enhancements.

The organization has been focused on bolstering its digital communications in many areas, including the ways that parishes communicate with their parishioners. Chancellor John Cahill has worked to ensure the infrastructure is in place for modern communications, “The Good Newsroom is something we are supporting because of its key role in evangelization. In today’s news environment, we are showing up in all the ways we can with information about the positive aspects of Catholicism and our contributions to society at large.”

Bishop Joseph Espaillat, a key member of the newsroom planning and oversight committee requested that the app be completed quickly. “Most people get their news through apps, so we had to do this. The launch of the new app will support what all of our priests and people are doing, which is to spread the good word in our communities and beyond our local areas.”
