A Faith that Goes Out: Being Missionary

Dr. Patrick Donovan
Director, Diocesan Leadership Institute
Bridgeport, Connecticut

Ours is a faith that does not just stand at the doors and wait for people to come in. We are a faith that goes out. How does our ministry change if we approach our call as missionaries? What does it mean to form catechists with a “missionary spirituality, understood as an encounter with others, an effort in the world, and a passion for evangelization, nourishes the life of the catechist and saves him … from self-absorption.”

Attentive to the unique gifts and functions of each person, we will consider how all parishioners are to serve as witnesses to their faith. Finding Our Roots: The Gift of Charism

Sister Maryann Seton Lopiccolo, SC
Episcopal Delegate for Religious
Diocese of Brooklyn

The growing interest today in genealogy and ancestral traits peaks our curiosity as women and men in Consecrated Life as to our “religious ancestry” in the Church and our common heritage in the Gospel of Jesus. As members of different consecrated religious communities, how are we all inter-related? How do we honor our various histories and charisms today?

Missionary Disciples: The four principles of the New Evangelization

Rev. Ambiorix Rodriguez
Pastor, Church of St. Elizabeth
Archdiocese of New York

In Evangelii Gaudium (2013), Pope Francis challenges every baptized to be “actively engaged in evangelization” as “Missionary disciples” (EG#120). This is only possible after “he or she has encountered the love of God in Christ Jesus.” Encounter is the first and basic principle of the New Evangelization. In Living as Missionary Disciples (2017), the USCCB proposes a biblical method of four principles to help us fully live as “missionary disciples” for the New Evangelization. Come to know what they are.

Postmodernidad: un reto a una Iglesia Evangelizadora

Monseñor Manuel A. Cruz, D.D.
Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of Newark | Obispo auxiliar Arquidiócesis de Newark

Rev. Ambiorix Rodriguez
Parraco, Iglesia St. Elizabeth
Arquidiócesis de Nueva York, New York

Joseph Nuzzi
Pastoral Associate
St. Francis of Assisi

The document, “Sacrosanctum Concilium” proclaims that the “liturgy is the summit toward which the activity of the Church is directed; at the same time it is the font from which all her power flows.” (SC 10) How are we to understand this?  How can the celebration of the Mass be the source of the Church and our ultimate end?  Isn’t there more to the Church than “just” Mass? In this workshop, we will discuss how the Mass, it’s major and minor rituals, as well as the words proclaimed, all work together to bring the assembly in touch with the Triune God.

Striving to Be Eucharistic: Simplicity and Authenticity in Liturgical Music-Making

Conner McCain
Professor and Director of Sacred Music
Saint Joseph’s Seminary, New York

In the Eucharist, we find two qualities which are relevant both to the practice of sacred music and also, more generally, to the daily living out of the Gospel: (1) the simplicity of the matter of the Eucharist, the ordinary bread which is made extraordinary by (2) the fully authentic gift, which is the form of the Eucharist, the pouring out of Himself, Jesus Christ, in the act of Consecration. The task of this presentation is to show how this dichotomy of simplicity and authenticity can be revealed to the faithful by the work of the liturgical musician, primarily through a foundation in silence and by emotionally engaging the faithful in their longing for the Beautiful One, which is ultimately fulfilled by Christ, in His Word and in His Body.

Liturgical music is not merely an accompaniment to the Sacrifice of the Mass. It always points beyond itself to the perfectly simple and authentic gift of Christ in the Eucharist. This presentation, therefore, is not only aimed at connecting the liturgical musician with the meaning of their own work, but is also designed to help the average parishioner encounter and pray with sacred music in a more fulfilling way.
