STATEMENT FROM ARCHBISHOP DOLAN ON SAINT VINCENT’S MEDICAL CENTER

 

Archbishop Timothy Dolan, Archbishop of New York, issued the following statement today in reaction to news stories concerning the possible sale of Saint Vincent’s Medical Center. 

 

“It would be sad and disappointing if Saint Vincent’s Medical Center were to close, because of the unique service it has provided to our city, particularly Manhattan’s West Side. Although the Archdiocese of New York neither owns nor sponsors Saint Vincent’s Medical Center, and is not involved in its operation, we have closely monitored the situation, and know the great difficulty in operating a hospital of this kind. This is one of the primary reasons that the Archdiocese has transitioned its health care ministry to new initiatives like the PACE program that provides senior care to residents in their own homes.

 

“It would be my hope and prayer that government, business, and health care leaders could work closely with the administration of Saint Vincent’s Medical Center to see if there is some way that this valuable medical facility could be saved.   I am also very grateful to a number of our elected officials and other community leaders who, even this morning, have told me that they agree with our view that Saint Vincent’s has been a very valuable part of the New York community’s health care and should remain open.”
