ARCHDIOCESE COMMEMORATES SEPTEMBER 11TH TENTH ANNIVERSARY

The Most Reverend Timothy M. Dolan, Archbishop of New York, the pastors and parishes of the Archdiocese of New York, will commemorate the Tenth Anniversary of September 11th, in a series of masses, prayers, and  remembrances within the archdiocese beginning Sunday, September 4th continued through Sunday, September 11th.

For the occasion of Sunday, September 11th, Archbishop Dolan has also granted permission to parishes in the archdiocese to use a special form of the Mass on that day, such as the Mass for Peace and Justice, or the Mass for Time of War or Civil Disturbance, or a Mass for the Dead, especially in parishes with ties to those who lost their lives or churches that are close to the site of the attacks.

Archbishop Dolan will speak at the New York Police Department ceremony on Thursday, September 8th at 10:30 AM at Avery Fisher Hall in Lincoln Center.
 
On Saturday the 10th at 3:00 PM at St. Patrick’s Cathedral (5th Avenue and 51st Street) there will be a prayer service led by Archbishop Dolan for the New York City Fire Department.

Archbishop Dolan will celebrate a Memorial  Mass  on the morning of Sunday, September 11, at 9:00 AM at St. Patrick’s Cathedral. 

The archbishop will celebrate another mass at 12:30 PM that same day at which Edward Cardinal Egan, Archbishop Emeritus of New York, will deliver the homily at St. Peter’s Church, across from the site of the World Trade Center, on Barclay and Church Street.

At 3:30 PM on Sunday the 11th, Archbishop Dolan will speak at the Cantor Fitzgerald memorial service in honor of the 658 employees whose lives were taken at its World Trade Center offices.

In addition to the following commemorative events within the Archdiocese of New York, many churches throughout the city will toll their bells at 8:46 AM and 9:03 AM, the times that the Twin Towers were struck.

On Sunday, September 4 at 9:00 AM,  St. Francis of Assisi Church in Manhattan (W. 31st Street between 6th and 7th Avenue) will host a Rosary and Mass followed by an annual walk of remembrance for Father Mychal Judge, O.F.M., the Fire Department chaplain who was the first 9/11 victim to be identified.

Iona College in New Rochelle (715 North Avenue) will have a commemoration service to honor the 15 deceased alumni and other members of the college community on Friday, September 9 at Noon.

At 3:30 PM on Friday, September 9th, former Mayor Rudolph Giuliani, class of ‘65, will speak at a commemorative event at Manhattan College Chapel (4513 Manhattan College Parkway) in the Bronx. 

St. John’s University on Staten Island (300 Howard Avenue) will host a display of the Victims Memorial Quilt on Saturday, September 10 through Monday, September 12. The display is complimentary and open to the public.

On Saturday, September 10,  at St. Patrick’s Cathedral, Pueri Cantores, a group of 300 young singers from parish and school choirs, will sing at a Mass honoring victims and their families at 5:30 PM. Archbishop Francis A. Chullikatt, the Vatican’s nuncio to the United Nations, will celebrate.

There will be an Evening of Solemn Remembrance beginning at 4:30 PM also on Saturday at St. Peter’s Church, Staten Island (53 Saint Mark’s Place) which will include Mass, music, Benediction and candlelight procession within the church, which overlooks New York Harbor. Adoration and prayer will conclude at 7:30 PM.

In Middletown at 2:30 PM on Sunday, September 11, Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church (90 Euclid Avenue)will have a remembrance service: “A Prayer for Peace, A Pledge for Tomorrow.”

St. Vincent Ferrer Church (E. 65th and Lexington Avenue) in Manhattan will host a choral remembrance at 4:00 PM also on Sunday.

The latest remembrance will begin at 7:00 PM on Sunday at Graymoor, the home of the Franciscan Sisters and Friars of the Atonement, in Garrison. The Atonement Friars and the Garrison Volunteer Fire Company will hold candlelight prayer service at the WTC Memorial Cross erected by ironworkers of Local 40, New York City. Putnam County Sheriff, Brig. Gen. Donald B. Smith, (US Army, Ret.), will speak.
