Catholics who fulfill their calling to be educators by teaching in public schools are often overlooked as instruments of evangelization. Certainly, they may not and they do not proselytize. However, without saying a word about their faith, they are witnesses to all the teachings and values of the Catholic Church, especially its social mission. The concern and care they show for their students are missionary activities in themselves. Many of these teachers also volunteer as catechists in their parish religious programs and countless other ministries

At the Catechetical Office, we think these selfless men and women deserve the opportunity to recharge their spiritual batteries, meet other teachers, and spend time in contemplation of the One who gave them their vocation. That's why we set aside a special retreat day each year just for Catholics who teach in the public schools located throughout our archdiocese

This year's Annual Retreat Day for Catholic Teachers in Public Schools is scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 3, from 9:00 am to 1:30 pm at the beautiful Maryknoll Fathers and Brothers Building, the headquarters of Maryknoll in Ossining, NY. Surrounded by photos and artifacts from this great foreign mission society, the teacher will hear from yet another missionary, the Rev. Ugo Nacciarone, SJ. This Brooklyn-born Jesuit spent nearly 40 years of service in Africa before returning to the U.S. in 2007

If you are a Catholic who teaches in a public school or if you have a friend or relative who does, why not take advantage of this opportunity. The fee is $25.00 per person and includes refreshments and lunch. Reservations are required. To find our more, email Sr. Zelide Ceccagno, MSCS, or call her at 914-965-0490. She is coordinating the day and will be happy to tell you more.
