MASS IN HONOR OF THE CANONIZATION OF MOTHER TERESA OF CALCUTTA
There will be a Mass in honor of the recent canonization of St. Teresa of Calcutta (Mother Teresa) this Saturday, September 10 at 9:30AM at Saint Patrick’s Cathedral. Archbishop of New York, Timothy Cardinal Dolan, will be the principal celebrant of the Mass. Archbishop Bernardito Auza, the Permanent Observer of the Holy See to the United Nations, and Archbishop Christophe Pierre, the Apostolic Nuncio to the United States, will concelebrate. Archbishop Pierre will also be the homilist.
Mother Teresa’s ministry brought her to New York almost every year to visit the six houses she established in the service of the “poorest of the poor” of the city. These included a homeless shelter and an AIDS Hospice. The Mass in her honor is scheduled for this Saturday, September 10, to ensure that the Missionaries of Charity, who attended the canonization of their foundress in Rome, would be able to participate in the celebration.
The image of Mother Teresa that was displayed on the façade of St. Peter’s Basilica during her canonization was commissioned by the Knights of Columbus; and the original portrait will be placed in the Sanctuary for the Mass.
