STATEMENT OF HIS EMINENCE EDWARD CARDINAL EGAN ON THE APPOINTMENT OF THE MOST REVEREND EDWIN F. O’BRIEN AS ARCHBISHOP OF BALTIMORE

"The clergy, religious and laity of the Archdiocese of New York join me in expressing warmest congratulations to His Excellency, The Most Reverend Edwin F. O’Brien, on the occasion of his appointment as Archbishop of Baltimore.  A priest of the Archdiocese of New York, who served as Secretary to both Terence Cardinal Cooke and John Cardinal O’Connor, and, as well, as Rector of Saint Joseph Seminary in Yonkers, Archbishop O’Brien is well-known and much admired throughout Greater New York.  We assure him of our prayers and best wishes as he concludes his leadership of the Archdiocese for the Military Services and accepts new responsibilities as Shepherd of the Archdiocese of Baltimore, the first community of faith to become an Archdiocese in our beloved nation"
