There's no doubt that Pope Francis has changed the tone of the papacy. He's accessible and energetic, where his predecessor seemed reclusive and tired. But in becoming the face of change, Francis has also raised the expectation of change. In Pope Francis Among the Wolves: The Inside Story of a Revolution, Marco Politi takes us deep inside the power struggle roiling the Holy See, beginning with Benedict XVI, the pope who famously resigned in 2013, and intensifying with the contested and unexpected election of Jorge Mario Bergoglio, archbishop of Buenos Aires, now known as Pope Francis. Politi's account balances the perspectives of Pope Francis's supporters, Benedict's sympathizers, and the disappointed Catholic laity, who feel alienated by the institution's secrecy, financial corruption, and refusal to modernize. Pope Francis's emphasis on pastoral work rather than theological doctrine in the developing world has provoked the ire of the Roman Curia. He and his supporters are in a great battle with the defenders of Catholic tradition and with ecclesiastical corruption in Rome and Italy. In this conflict, the future of Catholicism is at stake. Will Pope Francis succeed in overcoming his opponents and save the faith from decline? Marco Politi is a leading international expert on Vatican issues for more than 40 years. He is a journalist with the newspaper il Fatto Quotidiano and was the Vatican correspondent for La Repubblica. With Carl Bernstein, he wrote the international best-seller His Holiness. His other books include Pope Wojtyla: The Farewell; The Return of God; I, Gay Priest; The Church That Says No; and Joseph Ratzinger: Crisis of a Papacy. I am writing on behalf of the Carnegie Council for Ethics in International Affairs, and we are wondering if you could please help us spread the word about this event. Thank you in advance.
